Edgartown, Martha’s Vineyard
In 2016 I visited Edgartown in America for the fourth time. These photographs are from that most recent trip, which coincided with the 4th July celebrations.
Edgartown is on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, a 45 minute ferry trip from Wood’s Hole on Cape Cod, which itself is a few hours drive from Boston. You can read more about the rest of the island on my Martha’s Vineyard and Menemsha blogs.
Edgartown is classic New England and classic American, with it’s Main Street running through the heart of the small town with its craft, book and coffee shops.
A magnificent natural harbour features lots of expensive yachts and cruisers. There are some excellent restaurants, many of which specialise unsurprisingly in seafood.
The lighthouse is easily reached, easy for photographing it at different times of the day, including sunset.
Our most recent visit coincided with July 4th, Independence Day for the United States, many of the houses and shops were decorated.
A huge parade took place through the streets.
Followed by a firework display around the Edgartown Lighthouse.
Just across the water is Chappaquiddick Island, linked by the ‘on-time’ ferry.
What’s interesting about Martha’s Vineyard is that it’s got so many different contrasting communities. On a previous visit President Obama was visiting Oak Bluffs, just a few miles away. Previously Bill Clinton also had his holidays on Martha’s Vineyard when he was president.
