Inchcailloch Island, Loch Lomond

Posted In: Favourite Places

In my opinion this is one of the most stunning places in Scotland and luckilly it’s just a few minutes from my door. It’s Inchcailloch Island in Loch Lomond, above you can see the view from the highest point on the island. Below a view of the island itself, taken from Balmaha on the mainland.

Nearly all of my trips to Inchcailloch Island have been on business, making videos, taking photographs etc. It’s always a pleasure to visit. On this blog I thought that I’d tell you more about Inchcailloch, especially if you haven’t as yet been, plus of course give you a chance to see some of my photographs and videos of it.

Friends of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs

Let’s start with a couple of films, firstly one for the Friends of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs made a few years ago as an introduction video to their new website.

In 2013 I produced a series of 9 stories about people who live and work in the park. These then featured on a DVD, called Celebrating Park People and Their Stories, which is sold by The Friends of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs, one of those stories featured Sandy McFarlane of the Balmaha Boatyard, more of Sandy to come in this blog.

Love Loch Lomond

This is from a series of short films produced during 2013’s Year of Natural Scotland for tourism group Love Loch Lomond. This gave me a chance to be filmed enjoying my favourite view in Loch Lomond, at the highest point of Inchcailloch Island.

Getting to Inchcailloch

One of the easiest ways to get to Inchcailloch is to take a trip to Balmaha, park in the free car park and then walk along to the Balmaha Boatyard. There you can take one of Sandy McFarlane’s quaint wooden boats for the short ‘on-demand’ ferry trip to the island.

As well as the island ferry service the Balmaha Boatyard run a much written about post service to Loch Lomond’s island communities. You can join that service when it is in operation and you won’t be disappointed on what has to be one of the most stunning cruises on Loch Lomond.

The trip across to the island is only 5 minutes but is very much part of the experience.

Arriving on the island you will see this enchanting pathway through the island. Come in spring when the bluebells are out and you will be rewarded with a carpet of blue.

The Highland Boundary Fault Line cuts through the island. On the lower south end of the island you will find Port Bawn and a nice beach to relax on, especially if you’ve climbed to the summit of the islands hill.

Portraits on Inchcailloch Island

Back to work and my assignments as a portrait photographer. Here are two examples from Inchcailloch Island, a very recent pre-wedding engagement shoot and a family photography session from a couple of years ago.

Inchcailloch’s View

I’ve left the best to last… the view… which is incredible, across Loch Lomond and its islands towards Ben Lomond in the distance, especially good during Autumn…

and not too bad in the Summer either!

The pathway that takes you up is more like a spiral staircase. It’s well worth the effort.

So have I convinced you about Inchcailloch yet? Don’t just take my word for it Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park describe the island as the jewel in Loch Lomond’s crown.
