Paddle Steamer, Loch Lomond

The Maid of the Loch, Loch Lomond

Posted In: Photography For Business

I have produced many promotional videos for businesses and charities in Scotland. However, for some we have taken the process a couple of stages further, creating longer films and documentaries to be produced onto DVD. This was a very enjoyable project, which gave us an opportunity to tell a very interesting story about Loch Lomond’s last paddle steamer – The Maid of the Loch.

The story though starts with this short promotional film that was used by the charity as part of an Heritage Lottery Funding Application to get the paddle steamer back into operation.

At the time we made that film an archive had been discovered of old footage featuring the Maid of the Loch sailing on Loch Lomond. There were even clips of the Queen sailing on board. When we went through these gems we saw an opportunity to produce a documentary about Loch Lomond’s last paddle steamer.

The DVD documentary that we produced was titled ‘The Voyage of The Maid’ and told the fascinating story, not just about the Maid, but the golden age of paddle steamers in Scotland.

This was the trailer used to promote the DVD.

Since that time we’ve sold many DVD’s mainly on-line for friends and supporters of the charity, not just in Scotland, but elsewhere too with copies going to America, New Zealand, Australia etc.

The DVD’s have also been sold in shops and on-board The Maid of The Loch steamship when she is open between Easter and Autumn.

We worked as a team of three. From the Maid of the Loch John Beveridge was the ideal person to tell the story on camera, a real enthusiast he’s been there at many of the key moments of her post sailing history. I also teamed up with Alan McMaster who filmed and edited the DVD. I wrote the script, voiced the continuity and produced the documentary.

The DVD is still available to purchase at – www.voyageofthemaid.co.uk

This was enormous fun. The Maid of the Loch is such a beautiful boat and as well as filming her I also took a series of photographs that were used on the DVD cover. Here are a few:
