My Top 10 of Scotland

Posted In: Favourite Places

Somehow I have managed to compile my top 10 of Scotland list, featuring my favourite places in this beautiful country. There were lots of other options that sadly missed the 10, for as country as beautiful at Scotland it really should be a bigger list.

Looking at the list though it is very biased towards the West of Scotland, but that’s because this is where I have visited the most, also it does take some beating! Hope you like the top 10.

10 – Iona

I visited Iona as part of a three island trip, which also included Staffa and Mull. Iona is full of history and has a special atmosphere, some great views from the beaches.

9 – South Queensferry

I was photographing a christening in South Queensferry and was rewarded for arriving in plenty of time to get a brilliant winter view of the Forth Rail Bridge with the sun low in the sky.

8 – Cairngorms

Elsewhere on this list is a trip to see puffins in Staffa, at no.8 though is a trip to see reindeer in Cairngorms National Park. A real adventure, including a short walk before an opportunity to meet, stroke and feed the animals at the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre.

7 – Tarbert

Half of this list are islands, this small and stunning gem is just off the Kintyre Peninsula with some beautiful beaches.

5 – Staffa

What a spectacular island, arriving by boat you start by bobbing around at the entrance to the famous Fingal’s Cave. Climbing up the steps to the high ground of the island you are soon joined by these marvellous birds.

4 – Arran

A real favourite place, many happy holidays on the Island of Arran. It’s so easy to get too, once there you immediately relax into Arran time!

3 – Skye

I’ve visited Skye many times, in bad weather it can look very bleak, the opposite though is true in sunshine!

2 – Ardnamurchan

I was blown away by my first visit to Ardnamurchan, with its spectacular scenery. Right at the western tip of the peninsula there is some of the best views, both at Ardnamurchan Point, with its lighthouse and at nearby Sanna (above).

1 – Loch Lomond

Well at no.1 it has to be Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park. Not just because I live and work here, but because I love the scenery, the views, island and villages. There’s nothing better than being on the loch itself, this view shows off Ben Lomond in the distance.
