Take Better Photographs – The Course

Posted In: Photography Training

My ‘Take Better Photographs’ course runs at various times through the year. Over a weekday from 10am-5pm I provide an introduction to photography in a relaxed environment, a real hands on experience. Every single person who has been on it rates the course on feedback forms as better than expected and most importantly tick yes to the question ‘Do you feel that the course will help you to take better photographs?’.

For the course in February I welcomed Brian Aiton and Nick Fletcher to my Loch Lomond base in the village of Drymen and we started by learning about how cameras work, making sense of all the dials and controls before getting hands-on with some practical skills. I really enjoy the moment in each course where you can see that they really understand how easy it is to take control of the camera and to get more creative.

For the afternoon we travelled to nearby Balmaha, where we experienced some excellent weather for the time of year. Here are some photographs of Brian and Nick in action.

Course Topics

Within the course we cover topics including camera controls, portraiture, landscape photography, composing photographs, aperture, exposure, focus, shooting in manual, advice on equipment, workflow, digital editing, light, how cameras work, showcasing your photography and developing your photography skills.

The Results

Nick and Brian by early afternoon were comfortably shooting on manual mode with a real clear understanding of the camera controls. This allowed them to concentrate on their compositions and create some really strong images. Here is an example from each of them. I am really pleased with not only what they captured but their understanding of how to take better photographs.

Steve & Brian’s verdict

Some really nice feedback from the guys: From Brian ‘I enjoyed every second of the course most best of all was seeing the photographs that I took. It made me feel like I am making real progress’. From Steve ‘Paul helped me grasp the principals very well and I have gained a lot of confidence from today’. Thanks guys you made the day very enjoyable, please keep me up to date with your progress in photography.
